TWO TOP TENS FOR ZENN RACING TEAM
Zenn racing team: Rich Mader, Rob Cady
Santa Rosa, CA - The weather conditions for the Apple Pie Criterium were very unstable, with gusty winds and rain threatening. In the elite 3’s race, right before the masters race, the clouds opened up and the course was soaked. On the last lap of that race, a crash on the second corner took out most of the field, showing how dangerous the couse conditions were. The Zenn team lined up with a relatively small field with large team presence from Clover and Webcor.
On the first lap, attacks took off from the gun, with Clover's Bubba Melcher, Mark Trujillo and Webcor’s Joel Robertson getting a good gap on the peloton. Rob Cady, working with East Bay Velo's Lucas Paz and other riders, pulled the break back to less than 15-seconds. But, with no organization in the chase group, the break stretched their lead to back up to 40-seconds. After Rob worked hard at the front, Rich Mader covered moves and took his turn working to pull the break back.
With less than 10 laps to go and the break having a minute plus gap, Rich and Rob worked in the pack to set up for the last lap and the bunch sprint. On the last lap, coming into the first corner, Dave McCook took off and Rich worked to close the gap and set up Rob for the sprint. On the straight before the last corner, Rob launched off the front and caught McCook with 50 meters to go, taking the field sprint for 7th, with Rich close on his wheel for 10th. Mark Trujillo got the win, with Joel Robertson in second and Bubba Melcher in third. Good teamwork for Zenn!!
